Monitoring relays are scheduling and failure preventive equipment used to maintain electrical networks. These relays are used to verify the safe operating conditions of a power system or the protective system. These relays are used to limit the consequences of faults by offering protection from operating failures that can result in expensive repairs and often non-repairable damage. The monitoring relays measure occurring failures in functionality and are quick to react by way of switching off the network part or send a signal or message to the controller for restoring the reliable and safe operation of the network installation based on the operating, protection and monitoring principles that the equipment has been designed and installed. These relays are sensitive to voltage, phase or power, current, or frequency and their functions include fault detection, voltage checking and direction-sensing of the power system but do not directly sense the fault.

Monitoring relays can be used to control single or multiple functions. The relays ensure reliable operations of the different parts of an electrical and mechanical installation by monitoring the availability of the parts as per the designed tolerances. These relays are also used in combination with a wide array of measuring and protection relays. Discrete zones are identified within the system and protection equipment like measuring and monitoring relays are used to detect abnormalities in operations of each of the system components. These relays help detect potential faults that can be immediately recognized and corrected to avoid large scale damage to system and components.
